The Black Bull Inn is situated in the rural village of Lowick which is found in the northern part of Northumberland, approximately 3 miles to the west of the A1 from the Fenwick junction. It lies around 9 miles south of Berwick Upon Tweed, 7 miles from Holy Island and 7 miles north east of Wooler. The property was first licensed as a public house in 1817. It is believed that the building, in parts, dates back to the mid 1600’s when it was part of an important farm within the village. There have been many owners and publicans in this time but it was probably the Grundy family who put the Black Bull on the map during the 1980’s.
The pub closed in 2014 after several years of brewery ownership and was declared an asset of community value in 2015 after much campaigning by the local people. In the same year, LEKT Property Limited, a family business which was created to support rural and community development in Northumberland acquired the freehold. Through the efforts of family, friends, volunteers and local contractors the pub was totally refurbished and re-opened as a contemporary country inn during early 2017.
The Black Bull Inn is an ideal location from which to explore Northumberland. Whether you’re visiting the many castles, walking the unspoilt local white sands, playing golf at one of the local courses, walking the many trails and paths; there is something for everyone in Northumberland. Less than an hour on the train to and from Edinburgh and Newcastle means that a day trip to further afield is just a short ride away.
The business opened for trade on the 24th of February 2017 and since then has made an amazing transition to become a guest favourite locally and internationally for its rooms, its food and its beer. The business now supports 15 local jobs all year round and with a philosophy to ingredients source locally, it supports many locally suppliers too.
The year 2020 represented another exciting chapter in the evolution of the Black Bull Inn. A new local company “Black Bull Management Services Ltd”, established by another local business at the nearby Hetton Steads, has exchanged contracts with LEKT Property Ltd and purchased the freehold on the 1st of July 2020.
